What if I cannot attend court on my scheduled date?

Continuances must be requested in person, at the Municipal Court's Violations Bureau, before the scheduled court date. Failure to appear on the scheduled court date may result in criminal liability.

What is an arraignment?

An arraignment is a first appearance in court where defendants are advised of their rights and charges. At arraignment, a defendant has the opportunity speak with a prosecutor, ask for a continuance, or enter a plea.

Can I plea bargain my traffic case?

Plea bargains are determined by the Lakewood Prosecutor's Office.

If a case is eligible to plead guilty by mail or plea bargain by mail (certain traffic cases only) a notice will be sent prior to your scheduled court date listed on your summons.

If a notice is not received prior to the scheduled court date an appearance in court on the date and time listed on your summons is required.

Can I plea bargain my case if it is not a traffic violation?

Plea bargains are determined by the Lakewood Prosecutor's Office.

The city prosecutors are available to speak with defendants at the date and time of the arraignment.

Can I pay my case over the Internet?

Only traffic cases authorized to plead guilty or plea bargain by mail may pay over the internet.

Can I pay my fine by phone?

Fines and fees by phone may be a paid by phone using a credit card by contacting the Court at 303-987-7400 (ext. 7) between the hours of 9:00am and 4:00pm.

How can I get a copy of my case?

Defendants may request relevant police reports and other materials regarding charges against them. This information can be attained by making a request from the Lakewood Prosecutor's Office or Police Records Section.

I have been charged with not providing proof of valid insurance. I did have insurance, I just didn't have my card with me. What should I do?

Proof of valid insurance should be provided to the Court two weeks prior to your court date to avoid additional court appearances.

Proof may be provided by fax, mail or personal appearance. The fax number is (303) 987-7447. Include a copy of the valid and current insurance card/policy, the insurance agent's name and telephone number, the summons number or copy of the summons, and the name and date of birth listed on the summons.

Insurance agents cannot release information to the Lakewood Prosecutor's Office without permission. Please notify the insurance agent that they may release insurance information to the Lakewood Prosecutor's Office.

I have been subpoenaed as a juror in this Court, but I cannot appear. What should I do?
