How

What
does an outdoor warning siren mean? What should I do when I hear
an outdoor warning siren?
The
City of Lakewood has an outdoor siren warning system that covers
most of the city in case a disaster or large-scale emergency develops.
The sirens feature loudspeakers for relaying verbal messages. Should
a large-scale emergency (dam failure, hazardous materials spill,
tornado, flash flood, etc.) require the use of the warning system,
you will hear a civil defense warning tone followed by verbal instructions
over the outdoor warning siren system.
If
you hear the outdoor warning sirens, you should tune in to your
radio (KOA) or television for further information and instructions.
Do not call the police or fire departments, unless you have an emergency,
because the phone lines must remain open for emergency calls.
Each
April, the City of Lakewood conducts an audible test of the system
in order to make sure they will work if we need them. Such warnings
are announced in advance via Looking at Lakewood and KLTV-Channel
8.
