Investigation Division

The Lakewood Police Department Investigation Division is responsible for the investigation of all crimes that occur in the City of Lakewood. A Division Chief leads the Investigation Division and either a commander or civilian manager leads each section. The division is comprised of three separate sections that are the Crimes Against Persons Section, Crimes Against Property Section, and the Crime Lab. Each of these sections is made up of several different teams that have a unique and distinct function. Detectives and civilian personnel that comprise the Investigation Division are professional, dedicated, and motivated men and women who seek to bring to justice those who commit crime and cause disorder in our city.

A commander leads the Crimes Against Persons Section and the section is made up of five different teams. These teams are the Major Crimes Team, the Crimes Against Children Team, the Victim Advocate Team, and two separate Juvenile Crime Units. This section investigates all violent crimes committed against adults or juveniles including homicide, robbery, domestic violence, and sex assault to name only a few. Members of this section are also part of the First Judicial District Law Enforcement Critical Incident Response Team that investigates the use of deadly force by sworn officers throughout the First Judicial District. The Victim Advocate Team is made up of full time civilian employees and volunteers who provide much needed assistance to victims and their families.

The Crimes Against Property Section is also led by a commander and is made up of several different teams. Three of these teams are assigned geographic sectors and they investigate all property crimes that occur in the North Sector, the West Sector, and the South Sector. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is responsible for a wide range of investigative activities that include liquor enforcement, prostitution, organized crime, and terrorism to name just few. The departments two Crime Analyst's are also assigned to this team and they provide current and up to date analysis of the crime patterns occurring throughout the city. Finally, members of this section belong to the West Metro Drug Task Force. This is a multi agency countywide task force that investigates the distribution of narcotics in Jefferson County.

The Crime Lab is led by a civilian manager and is comprised of two separate teams. These teams are the Forensic Analysis Team and the Forensic Identification Team. The Forensic Analysis Team is responsible for the processing of major crime scenes and evidence recovered from those scenes. The Forensic Identification Team is responsible for the identification of suspects based on fingerprints recovered from a crime scene or from fingerprints located in local, state, and federal data basses. This team is also responsible for the registration of sex offenders and parole and probation clients.
