Here's a unique opportunity for teens to go behind the scenes at Lakewood Police Department and experience first-hand how the police do their job. Join us for an unforgettable encounter!

ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

  • Drive a police car
  • Help solve a crime at a mock crime scene
  • Learn and practice self-defense tactics
  • Try on SWAT gear
  • Meet a K-9 up close
  • Operate a police radar gun
  • Run a police recruit obstacle course
  • Much more!

The Youth Police Academy is a 40 hour weeklong dynamic opportunity for 16 - 18-year-olds to experience what it is like to be a police officer in the United States today. The academy has been designed to be a hands-on active experience for motivated youth. Attendees have the unique opportunity to interact and learn in a safe environment with law-enforcement officers. Attendees, through team building exercises, classroom instruction, and numerous in-the-field training activities receive an appreciation for the challenges facing police and how police attempt to successfully accomplish their mission in our community.

Who Should Apply

Although future police officers and aspiring criminal justice workers are certainly encouraged to apply, high school students who have a general interest in civics, government, and the community may also benefit from the varied experiences in the Academy.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 16 -18 years old or attending a Lakewood-area school (public or private)
  • Completed at least the 10th grade
  • Possess a valid Colorado driver's license or permit.
  • GPA of at least 2.0
  • Complete an application and submit to a background check
  • Eagerness to learn more about the police and criminal justice system
  • $20 Registration fee
