City Council: Frequently Asked Questions

What are ordinances and resolutions?

On the agenda you will see "resolutions" and "ordinances."

Resolutions appear once before the City Council and are generally items of routine nature such as purchases, contracts or the expression of a position that the City will take on a metropolitan issue.

Ordinances are laws that govern the city. On "first reading," they are simply introduced, then scheduled for "second reading" -- a public hearing and official Council action -- two weeks later.
